Cyriel Dessers is apparently in advanced talks over a move to join Greek side PAOK.
A report dated 14 June gives some detail on the deal, claiming that the terms offered to the player are acceptable following one season at Ibrox.
Last summer Micky Beale agreed a £4m deal to sign Dessers from Cremonese where he had just helped them to relegation from Serie A.
Faced with the duds signed by Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst there is a drive to move players out of Ibrox this summer to reduce the pressure caused by the highest wage bill in Scotland.
Coming from Italy to Scotland Dessers will be on a salary similar to Connor Goldson and James Tavernier, getting the striker moved on would be a big boost while cheaper squad fillers like Jefte, Connor Barron and Clinton Nsiala are portrayed as world beaters.
Greek publisher Novosports claims:
PAOK is moving dynamically in the transfer market to strengthen its offensive line. It has been known for several days that the list of transfer candidates includes Danish international striker Martin Brathwaite , who seems to be one of the team’s priorities for the striker position next season.
At the same time, according to information from Novasports.gr, the case of Cyril Dessers , who has completed his collaboration with Rangers and is looking for the next stage of his career, is also being seriously considered. Discussions with Dessers are at an advanced level and the player’s side appears satisfied with the financial offer that has been submitted. Razvan Lucescu wants to have next season’s team’s main striker at his disposal in preparation. We must not forget that the “Two-Headed of the North” will try through the qualifiers to become the first Greek team to take part in the new format of the Champions League .
Martin Brathwaite continues to have obligations with Espanyol, as a result of which the Romanian is “obliged” to wait for the player. As far as Cyril Dessers is concerned, he is a footballer whose scoring frequency reveals his touch with the goal. The 29-year-old is capped six times with the Nigerian national team and also holds a Belgian passport.
This season, he played in 54 games with Rangers, scoring 22 times, while also providing nine assists. He has experience from European competitions, as in the 2021/22 season he was the top scorer in the UEFA Conference League with 10 goals in 13 games for Feyenoord . Last summer in four games in the Champions League qualifiers he scored once against Servette and provided two assists in Rangers ‘ 2-2 draw with Eindhoven .
The report doesn’t mention any transfer fee, it could be that PAOK are only interested in a season long loan.
By default with Danilo and Kemar Roofe out injured Dessers became Phil Clement’s first choice striker but became better known for missing sitters than finding the net.
One goal in five matches against Celtic summed up his contribution with the hoops taking 10 SPFL points then claiming the Scottish Cup Final with a late goal from Adam Idah.
Dessers is under contract at Ibrox until June 2027, if he leaves it will be with the usual spin of a substantial fee with attainable add-ons, in December he will turn 30.
