Nevin Takes The Blane For Antic-Celtic BBC Scotland

Poor Pat Nevin. The former Celtic fan has had a complaint upheld against him for the lies he told in the wake of Celtic winning the league last season.

Nevin was so incensed by the sight of the team he used to support winning the league that he had to try something, anything, to spoil the party.

And so he decided to go with accusing random Celtic fans of punching Lawrence Shankland.

Perhaps Pat will never know if any of his former friends or family members were among the group of celebrating Celtic fans that he wrongly accused of being violent criminals.

He did so safe in the knowledge that nobody in the editorial department at BBC Scotland would question for a minute the lie he broadcast.

Indeed, Nevin’s lie seems to have been the catalyst for the assorted army of Celtic haters at BBC Scotland to pile in on entirely innocent Celtic fans.

Anything to help them cope with another Celtic title win while their heroes in maroon ran away and cried all the way home to Gorgie.

Followed by the loss of their manager, captain and star man Cammy Devlin. Even their destination provided little comfort through the summer of pain.

Nevin’s lie about Celtic fans assaulting Lawrence Shankland was broadcast on Radio 5 Live.

It’s a brilliant, brilliant moment but some Celtic fans are attacking Lawrence Shankland. Two or three have punched him. It’s a dreadful thing that has happened just now. These are absolutely unacceptable scenes.

But it was over at BBC Scotland that the lie was amplified and became the topic of discussion in the aftermath of the most exciting climax to a season in 40 years.

Ryan Stevenson, Allan Preston, Andy Halliday – all went along with the claims from wee Pat, primed and ready to weigh in.

“They’re all going after Shankland as you can imagine” former jambo Allan Preston claimed.

“There were Celtic fans in and around bullying Shankland all over the place, he was almost fighting with them at one point. Clair Cowan runs on, the sports scientist runs on and it was just carnage.

“What I have seen there today is absolutely and utterly disgusting”.

A phrase used a few days earlier by Derek McInnes.

Hosts Kenny Macintyre and Tom English didn’t attempt to apply any restraint. They were suffering. They had built up expectations only to have them dulled by reality.

Had one punch been aimed at Shankland it would have been on a loop on Sky Sports News. And on BBC Scotland for days. It never happened.

Macintyre and English said nothing. They knew that no punches had been thrown but were consoled by the deflection. Both were in shock, sickened. Macintyre had Colin Chisholm on stand-by to sing The Hearts Song live in the BBC studio and his favourite Flute Band waiting for the post-match celebrations.

Darren O’Dea was in the studio to provide balance and comfort to the grieving BBC heavyweights.

What Preston actually seen was Celtic winning the league again, 40 years after Hearts last got that close to a title and bottled it in spectacular fashion at Dens Park.

That’s what he really found disgusting.

It will be interesting to see if Preston is also dragged screaming and kicking to make an apology after all he was quite clear that it was what he himself had witnessed.

Then it was the turn of another former Jambo, Stevenson, to spread the lies.

Worth noting that BBC Scotland handed out microphones to three former jambos that day – Preston, Stevenson and Andy Halliday.

“For a player to be attacked by fans is absolutely outrageous,” Stevenson said.

By now the lie is being treated as fact.

THE MASK SLIPPED FOR NICE GUY ANDY HALLIDAY

Halliday pitched in: “For the third time in as many months that there are fans again entering the pitch and we’re now led to believe that a couple of opposition players, Hearts players, have been struck.”

To be fair you would probably expect this from Halliday, after all he didn’t just play for the Gorgie losers but The Rangers as well.

He can come across as a decent guy at times on his many, many media platforms.

But the mask slipped last season, as it did for most of Scottish football.

The complete meltdown that took place between Celtic winning at Fir Park and lifting the trophy at Celtic Park was truly a wonderful, beautiful thing.

The sight of Celtic getting correct VAR decisions that we would never have got in seasons gone by was just way too much for most of the media to handle.

The penalty we were rightfully awarded at Fir Park became a national talking point, statements had to be issued, Police Scotland had to protect the referee’s home.

SELECTIVE OUTRAGE FROM BBC SCOTLAND

The stonewall penalty we were denied at Easter Road that could’ve cost us the title, the handball goal that should’ve been chalked off – meh.

The linesman’s laughable attempt to rule out Daizen Maeda’s goal that won the league – nothing to see here.

But so far only one man has been held to account.

Poor Pat Nevin, the sacrificial lamb served up to protect all the Celtic haters at BBC Scotland that Pat was so desperate to fit in with he ditched the team he supported as a boy.
