Rodgers linked with Leicester reunion over Celtic’s problem position

Daniel Amartey has been linked with a Brendan Rodgers reunion at Celtic.

The defensive midfielder left Leicester at the end of last season as a free agent to join Turkish side Besiktas but reports from Ghana suggest that he is looking to return to the UK.

Amartey started 18 EPL matches as Leicester were relegated in the 22/23 season and played in their FA Cup winning side under Rodgers.

At the age of 29 and able to play in central defence or in midfield Amartey would bring real experience to the Celtic squad with Rodgers well aware of his strengths.

Last summer Rodgers was forced to work with project signings of dubious quality, when it came to the crunch in the run in for the SPFL title the Irishman turned the clock back to the players that had delivered the treble for Ange Postecoglou.

The Sun reports:

Amartey was strongly linked with a move to Parkhead when leaving the relegated Foxes last summer.

The 29-year-old however instead joined Turkish giants Besiktas as a free agent.

He has made 27 appearances this term for the Super Lig outfit, but has fallen out of favour following a bright start.

And reports in Amartey’s west African home country claim Rodgers will seek to reunite with the 53-cap international this summer.

According to Transfermarkt Amartey is under contract until June 2026 but having signed as a free agent Beskitas are unlikely to be looking for a big fee if the player wants out after a year at the club.

The issue of finding a holding midfielder has been long running at Celtic, Ange Postecoglou tried James McCarthy, Yosuke Ideguchi, Aaron Mooy and Oliver Abildgaard in that role with only Mooy having some success.

Tomoki Iwata has shown some promise in that position but if the interest in Amartey is genuine he would appear to have the sort of quality that Rodgers has been aiming for since he returned to Celtic 11 months ago.

With at least eight Champions League matches next season stretching into January Rodgers knows that a significant improvement in the Staring XI and squad depth will be needed to be respectable in Europe while improving domestically.
