BREAKING NEWS- Sky Sports intervene with Celtic management claim

Late this afternoon Sky Sports claimed BREAKING NEWS from Celtic.

They then delivered a 44 second ‘news piece’ that said nothing in particular.

Celtic have been in London with un-named executives speaking to un-named candidates about the vacancy created on October 27.

BOILING OVER

The announcement that Brendan Rodgers had resigned was almost overshadowed by a statement from Dermot Desmond.

The simmering unrest, the not so cryptic comments from Rodgers had boiled over. Desmond, with 34% of the shares in Celtic didn’t hold back. Any prospective manager will have noted the brutal attack on the former Liverpool and Leicester City manager.

Fortunately Martin O’Neill had been sitting in a London coffee shop when he took a call from Desmond. Fifteen minutes later Celtic had an interim manager.

But how long is interim?

There has been no further comment from the club.

O’Neill has handled pre and post match media conferences for four matches. Three wins and a draw.

We are now well into the November international break with no real signs of progress. Wilfied Nancy is the left field name linked with the job. Kieran McKenna and Kjetil Knutsen are more predictable.

Vicky Gomersall of Sky Sports News said:

The club has been holding talks in London this week with various targets as they search for a new manager.

And they’ve got plenty of targets it has to be said. Columbus Crew boss Wilfried Nancy, Bodo Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen and Ipswich Town head coach Kieran McKenna are believed to be among the names being considered currently.

Also the Celtic hierarchy are due to sit down with the interim boss Martin O’Neill and assistant boss Shaun Maloney to discuss their futures beyond the current international break.

So that’s interesting as well. Also, on Celtic’s radar are the likes of the Welsh boss Craig Bellamy, and Nicky Hayden (Club Brugge) and Robbie Keane as well. So plenty of people on their radar. We’ll keep you across it all.

And that was it from Sky Sports News.

REHEAT

No detail of who from Celtic is in London or which candidates they are speaking to.

THE BREAKING NEWS was really just a reheat of Anthony Joseph’s report late on Monday night.

Lots of names, nothing in terms of detail.

It looks increasingly likely that the O’Neill and Maloney double act will continue. Maloney seems completely at ease on the training ground. At the League Cup semi-final he seemed to take the lead with instructions and tactics for extra-time.

O’Neill and his age seems to be the main stumbling block.

Most 73-year-olds like to spend Christmas at home, being visited by family. Celtic have 10 matches to play before the end of the year. In January they have seven matches to play including two in the Europa League.

It is an unrelenting schedule. Tough going for anyone, even more so for a73-year-old that has been out of club management for six years.

O’Neill has bailed Celtic out when they needed it most. Now it is time for Celtic to help out their interim manager. Let him step down with a Glasgow Derby success added to his CV and a cup final place for the next manager.

When that happens Sky Sports News really will have some BREAKING NEWS.
