Rodgers tones down transfer expectations

Brendan Rodgers doesn’t appear to be sharing the anxiety of many Celtic supporters as the closure of the transfer window comes within sight.

A striker, central defender and left-back seems to be the basic expectations of most supporters with concerns raised that Paulo Bernardo is the only outfield arrival with less than three weeks left to do business.

Two competitive matches into the new season Celtic have one left-back and one striker despite having the best part of £100m gaining interest in the bank account.

It has been obvious for more than a year that there is no cover or competition to Greg Taylor at left-back, when he was injured in January Alexandro Bernabei came in then was dumped out on loan to Brazil with no other option to the former Kilmarnock man.

Of more pressing concern is the striker position, Kyogo Furuhashi suffered two injuries today against Hibs before being replaced by Mikey Johnston who had to be replaced as a concussion sub.

Rodgers finds himself in a precocious situation but would only admit to being hopeful that the club hierarchy are about to provide him with another attacking option.

We know what we need. We’ve always known what we need. My focus is really with the players who are here. Hopefully we can strengthen the squad over the coming weeks. There are other players who can go in and play that position. And that’s what we have to do while we’re waiting for players to come in.

Oh Hyeon-gyu was sold to Genk on July 14 before Celtic left for a three match tour of the USA with negotiations for Adam Idah dragging on.

It seems that most stages of the Idah Saga have been played out but after coming off the bench in Norwich’s defeat to Oxford on Saturday it is difficult to see where any progress has been made.

Celtic only have one more SPFL match before the transfer window closes, anyone coming in at this stage is likely to take time to adapt to how Rodgers likes his team to play.

Nicolas Kuhn has scored in both SPFL matches this season but was patchy at best when he was signed in January, similarly Bernardo took around three months after coming in on loan last August to justify the faith shown by Rodgers.
