Phil Clement is set to strip James Tavernier of the Ibrox captaincy.
The former Wigan utility man was first given the armband during Graeme Murty’s second spell as caretaker with Steven Gerrard confirming that appointment in the summer of 2018.
Three further managers have stuck with that decision despite Tavernier’s clear lack of leadership skills and embarrassing media performances which earned him the nickname Captain Disappointed.
Over the last two months the Daily Record has been pushing the idea that Gerrard wants reunited with his former skipper in a ‘mega-bucks’ deal with Al Ettifaq but there has been little substance to those claims.
Tavpen should be preparing for his Testimonial Match at the start of next season but Clement is preparing to humiliate the defender by appointing Jack Butland as captain.
Scott McDermott of the Daily Record reports:
Jack Butland is set to be named the new Rangers captain.
Record Sport understands Ibrox boss Philippe Clement has told the keeper he will take over the armband from James Tavernier. Butland will be the club’s leader going into this season – casting huge doubts over Tavernier’s future. The current skipper is reportedly a target for ex-boss Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro-League side Al-Ettifaq, with Gers bracing themselves for a summer bid from the Middle East And it appears that Clement has decided Butland will replace him as captain.
The English keeper only signed last summer but has made a huge impact at the club – on and off the pitch. Butland has impressed Clement with his leadership skills since arriving in Glasgow from Crystal Palace. And with Tavernier potentially on his way out, Butland is in line to replace him in the role. The right-back is entering his testimonial season at Rangers but in 10 years at the club has only won three trophies.

NOTE: The Daily Record has deleted the tweet that went out promoting this story.
With two years left on a four year deal signed after losing in the final of the Europa League to Eintracht Frankfurt Tavpen can sit tight on his contract creating a further problem for Clement.
During nine years of breaking records at Ibrox there hasn’t been any sign of interest from English clubs in signing a defender most noted for taking penalties and free kicks. Even in his own family James is runner-up to brother Marcus in terms of ability.
Over the last couple of months of the 23/24 season Ibrox fans became increasingly critical of their skipper, especially the way that he wilted against Celtic’s Daizen Maeda.
Despite claims of a £21m bid being lined up for Butland there is no sign of that with the former Crystal Palace reserve about to humiliate last season’s skipper.

Losing titles, losing finals, losing cups, losing a penalty shoot out in a Euro final losing Jota, Maeda and anyone else bombing down his side of the pitch. Looked like he’d lost the fans and dressing room too by the end of the season (if not before). Now he’s lost the captaincy. If that’s not a serial loser…
