A promise from Ally McCoist to commit Hate Crimes has been called out by MP Steven Bonnar.
It seems that most politicians decided to look the other way when the comments surfaced on Social Media but the MP for Coatbridge hasn’t been found wanting.
There was nothing underhand about the comments, they weren’t picked up off camera or off mic, in his pomp on TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning McCoist was full of confidence as he promised to breach the Hate Bill when Celtic visit Ibrox on Sunday.
Sky Sports and BBC Radio Scotland will be covering the match, taking a break from his extensive media commitments McCoist will be there as a fan sitting among Season Ticket holders.
Reaction from public figures has been predictably light but the Daily Record reports Bonnar saying:
McCoist seems to have let his cheeky chappy mask slip here. Perhaps he can enlighten us on which protected group it is he intends to target at the upcoming Glasgow Derby?
On a day when everyone connected to the game in Scotland should be working to unsure the focus is firmly on what happens on the park, his comments are completely offside.
It seems that no-one from the Tories or Labour party has any view on the promise from the former Scotland striker:
I’ve got a hate bill by the way, a hate bill has been passed in the country. And I guarantee you, next Sunday at Ibrox, along with 48,000 I will be committing a breach of that hate bill in the particular Rangers versus Celtic game we are all going to. It is madness.
*****UPDATE: On Tuesday morning McCoist revealed that he has had a change of plan and won’t be going to Ibrox on Sunday*****
TalkSPORT seem to have been quite amused by the comments, no apology was offered although they didn’t send out a clip on their social media platforms.
As well as TalkSPORT McCoist is a regular on ITV, TNT, Viaplay and Amazon as he charms the listeners stringing together his favourite cliches such as ‘Absolutely Clive/Fletch’ ‘ I’ll tell you what Clive/Fletch’ ‘no doubt about it’ and many other tired old favourites.
English listeners seem to treat the former Sunderland striker as a national treasure, an image he likes to cultivate at every turn.
So far the media coverage to his comments has been simply factual, they haven’t been turned into a news story with very little reaction or follow up.
There is virtually no prospect of TalkSPORT asking McCoist what areas of Hate he intends to sing and chant about at Ibrox on Sunday.
