Four weeks ago Brian Wilson sat down with Gerry McCulloch to deliver another of his infamous Supporter Updates for Celtic TV.
‘It’s going to be a very active few weeks,’ the Interim Chairman claimed in relation to strengthening the Celtic squad.
Four weeks on Celtic have still to sign a single player.
Camilo Duran is kitted out and training with the squad in Portugal. For their own bizarre reasons Celtic are holding back on announcing the signing of the Colombian striker.
Qarabag and the Azerbaijan Embassy in London have both commented on the transfer. Typically Celtic are holding back.
Maik Nawrocki and Adam Idah have previously been pictured in Celtic kit before the announcement of their signing.
After three disastrous transfer windows some Celtic fans convinced themselves that summer 2026 would be different.
Martin O’Neill would insist on it. He wouldn’t be back otherwise. The board will back him, partly out of spite against Brendan Rodgers.
The more realistic fans have seen the scenario many times before.
Only in the summer of 2021 have Celtic truly backed a manager.
Even then Ange Postecoglou’s spending was covered by the sales of Kris Ajer, Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie.
Postecoglou and his agent Frank Trimboli pushed for those transfers. After 72 days in the job Dom McKay was replaced by Michael Nicholson as CEO.
DON’T PANIC, DON’T PANIC- THE MESSAGE FROM CHAIRMAN WILSON
Absolutely, and that is very much part of the basis on which he’s wanted to come back, and we’ve wanted him to come back.
It’s going to be a very active next few weeks, and we must come out of it with a stronger squad.
It’s worth mentioning maybe for all the criticisms last year, that eight of our players are at the World Cup.
We have a lot of very, very good players, so we want to not only retain that strength, but also to build on it.
Quite clearly there is no sense of urgency about the way Celtic are going about their business.
Three failed transfer windows has left the squad seriously weakened.
True eight players were missing from the squad that faced Shelbourne on Tuesday night.
Realists will know that Nicholson will be hoping to sell half of Celtic’s World Cup players.
Daizen Maeda will be at the top of his list. Ben Nygren and Auston Trusty will attract interest.
After three and a half seasons at Celtic Alistair Johnston knows that this summer is the ideal time to move on. Nicholson knows that the value of the Canadian is unlikely to get higher.
CELTIC DRAG OUT BUSINESS, REACTIVE RATHER THAN PROACTIVE
While this is going on O’Neill is still hoping to get Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi.
If anything sums up the inefficiencies of Celtic it is those two deals.
Iheanacho and Saracchi were critical to winning last season’s double.
They came off the bench in the Scottish Cup Final on May 23 but so far no deals have been concluded.
That doesn’t bode well for other transfer business.
Celtic were first linked to Duran on June 19 through David Friel in The Sun. July 10 looks his likely signing on date.
Martin O’Neill won’t have his World Cup players available until the AC Milan friendly on July 25. After that it gets serious- unless you are Chairman Wilson.
With Nicholson permanently hiding the former Labour MP is the voice of the club. Only a complete fool would believe the word of a politician.
The only thing that Wilson is very active in is his Scotsman attacks on the Scottish Government. Not the most diplomatic policy for the Chairman of a PLC.
