Mystery over the Celtic Park ‘assaults’

It seems that a very serious incident involving three Celtic employees has been virtually cleared from the news agenda.

Back on December 17 Celtic announced that Peter Lawwell was stepping down as Chairman, apparently because of abuse and threats.

So far there has been no court action taken against those involved. Lawwell hasn’t been seen at Celtic Park since stepping down on December 31.

Alongside the news of Lawwell resigning as Chairman was a very worrying account of what happened at Celtic Park after the League Cup Final defeat to St Mirren.

Michael Nicholson used the phrase assault which should have had alleged in front of it. Something that a leading sports lawyer really should know all about.

CELTIC PARK- THE WORKPLACE

No-one at their workplace should be subjected to violence. Physical violence is a complete no-no.

That is exactly where a ‘duty of care’ kicks in.

Every employer has to maintain the safety of their staff. There should be procedures in place. Human Resources should be on top of any incident of violence.

If three employees suffer it is a very serious matter.

Celtic announced this on December 17, so far there has been no follow up from the club.

Due to the League Cup Final there would have been a lot of people inside Celtic Park that day. Many of them corporate guests, enjoying hospitality to the full.

Everyone inside the stadium would have bought a ticket and be known to the club. The culprits shouldn’t be too difficult to identify.

After sharing his grief at the resignation of Peter Lawwell, Nicholson turned to a favourite theme. Criticising fans and making so far unproven accusations about their actions:

It’s a sad day for Celtic because of the reasons behind Peter’s decision to stand down. I know it’s a decision that weighed heavily on him. It’s not an easy decision but I think he’s made a decision for himself and for his family because of the abuses and because of the threats that they brought towards him.

And those are behaviours that we’ve seen from perhaps a very small minority of the Celtic support, but those are behaviours that are completely unacceptable. We’ve most recently had a situation where three of our colleagues were assaulted at Celtic Park on Sunday night after the match.

And as I say, these behaviours and conduct are completely unacceptable. For me, they’re not Celtic. They’re not values of Celtic supporters and Celtic family. And as a board, it strengthens our resolve to do the right thing for Celtic and to take this club forward together for the future.
