We had them on the ropes- Ibrox fans lament when Rodgers was one game away from being sacked!

While pining for the sacking of Phil Clement some Ibrox fans have been recalling how Brendan Rodgers was apparently in a similar position almost exactly a year ago!

That will be news to the Irishman and the Celtic support but in line with the strange take on reality that many bears have.

Sure there was anger and concern on the back of limp defeats to Kilmarnock and Hearts on successive weekends but there was barely a suggestion that the solution was to sack Rodgers.

The woeful recruitment of Mark Lawwell during the summer coupled with serious injury issues left Rodgers having to call on all his experience and know how to steer Celtic to calmer waters.

On December 17 Clement enjoyed the high point of his Ibrox reign, the honeymoon was in full flow when Aberdeen were beaten in the League Cup Final on the back of a Europa League victory away to Real Betis. Some even thought that they were indeed watching A Proper Football Manager!

Celtic got back to winning ways with a home victory over Livingston before a testing December 26 trip to Dundee.

Who had Paulo Bernardo and Mikey Johnston down to score their first goals of the season?

Even that win came at a cost, Cameron Carter-Vickers was injured and out of the next match but fortunately it was the fixture that Rodgers thrives on, the Glasgow Derby as he faced up to his umpteenth opponent in the away dug out.

Bernardo scored again, as did another specialist Kyogo Furuhashi with his SEVENTH  of 2023 against Celtic’s city rivals.

With that win the tide was stemmed, Celtic steadied but were still short of their best when they went to Ibrox in April.

Clement claimed a moral victory but just one point, his lap of honour was hollow and unconvincing, just like his Revolution!

There has been three more meetings between the managers since, Clement has been second best each time and takes that record and his exciting young team to Hampden for another match-off on December 15.

In many ways it is win-win for the angry bears, they either win a trophy or get to scream for Clement’s sacking to their incoming CEO the following day.
