Gazdag- Sky Sports name US based midfielder as Celtic target

Celtic have been credited with an interest in Daniel Gazdag of Philadelphia Union.

The attacking midfielder has spent the last three seasons in the MLS following a £1.2m move from Honved where he graduated from the club Academy.

At the age of 28 Gazdag doesn’t fall into the Project category of signing and suggests that the club does have an active Recruitment Department profiling players to see who fits the requirements of Brendan Rodgers.

Gazdag has 28 full international caps but his only involvement in the 2024 European Championships was a three minute appearance off the bench in the 2-0 defeat from Germany, although Hungary finished third in their group they failed to advance to the knock-out stage.

That list of players to cover for the expected sale of Matt O’Riley is a sensible policy but the ideal policy would be to have his successor already at the club.

Paulo Bernardo is expected to sign on a permanent basis before Sunday’s match against Kilmarnock but on the evidence so far is a very different type of midfielder.

Odin Thiago Holm and Tomoki Iwata both featured during the pre-season trip to the USA but failed to make any real inroads towards becoming a first pick in their outings last season.

Tanner Tessmann from Serie B side Venezia is probably the most interesting option of the three midfielders listed in the tweet, the American internationalist was linked with Inter Milan earlier in the summer but that move never went through.

Celtic’s guaranteed place in the Champions League should be a reasonable attraction for players but that was also the case in 2022 and 2023 with no noticeable improvement in the calibre of recruitment.

Brendan Rodgers is expected to host a media conference on Friday but has been fairly guarded in his comments over transfers despite the obvious frustration among fans at the lack of obvious transfer activity.
