Schmeichel doesn’t mess about as he sets Celtic expectations

Kasper Schmeichel was glowing with happiness as he conducted his first Celtic media interview.

His signing was announced on Thursday night sparking a journey from his holiday in Italy to Washington to meet up with an old manager and new team-mates.

Celtic’s interest in the Danish ‘keeper was hardly a state secret, Fabrizio Romano had spilled the beans with Celtic supporters quickly on the trail of Leicester’s EPLand FA Cup winning keeper.

At his holiday hotel, at the airport and on his flight to Washington Schmeichel was met by Celtic fans, last night he watched from the stand as Brendan Rodgers used his full squad to good effect in a 4-0 victory over DC United.

Scott Bain started last night’s match with Viljami Sinisalon taking over at half-time, by the tone of Schmeichel’s interview it seems unlikely that he will be playing in this week’s friendlies against Manchester City or Chelsea.

Asked what he was hoping that Celtic could do for his career that he hasn’t had elsewhere the new ‘keeper didn’t flinch with his answer:

Trophies! – It’s what football is about. Football is about winning and coming to a club with such a rich history of winning, a culture of draws aren’t enough, the only thing that matters is winning.

That’s one thing I really love about this club is that’s the mentality – you have to go out and win every competition that you’re in, so I can’t wait to get back playing football again.

Over the course of a week Celtic appear to have solved what was looking like a problem position with two good quality keepers arriving to join the squad in the USA.

There are no shortage of other areas that need strengthened, another striker and left-back look like priority areas but very little is coming out of substance on transfer business.

Talks appear to be on-going with Norwich and Benfica over deals for Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo with neither player requiring much in the way of settling in time.

The SPFL season starts in two weeks time, it doesn’t look like there will be much different about how the champions line up to start their title defence but between the sticks there will be a new ‘keeper, looking to pick up where Hart signed off by winning seven trophies out of nine.
