Don Robertson is a serial offender against Celtic

Against St Mirren last night Celtic were on the wrong end of two VAR decisions that can’t be justified.

In the first dubious VAR lines and a hazy image were used to deny Camilo Duran an equaliser.

In the second Don Robertson on VAR duty didn’t even provide VAR lines to back his hunch.

Without any evidence he instructed referee Ryan Lee to carry out a pitchside review.

But aren’t offside decisions definitive? Not up for debate, not for subjectivity?

Not if it involves Celtic.

The match referee looked at the same long range still image and followed the suggestion of his senior colleague and disallowed the goal from Shim Mheuka.

A decision without precedent.

ROBERTSON- A NINE YEAR TRACK RECORD

Well Robertson does have previous for being very selective on VAR duty.

You only have to go back to Celtic’s visit to Easter Road in May to find out how selective a VAR official can be in influencing the outcome of a match.

Robertson is of course one of Scotland’s top referees.

From the moment he awarded Ross County a penalty when Alex Schalk fell to the ground in April 2017 with a clear yard of space away from Erik Sviatchenko his promotion was assured.

Against St Mirren Robertson made two telling involvements that denied Celtic goals.

On another day it could have cost Celtic points.

With his mate Willie Collum as Head of Refereeing at the SFA Robertson has nothing to worry about.

He knows the formula to reach the top in refereeing. Others like Ryan Lee and Duncan Nicolson are following the template.

The goal for every official in Scotland is financial. Getting the top domestic matches and a share of the highly lucrative European jollies. Plus those generous UEFA expenses with very few questions asked. Fill yer boots lads.

CELTIC DENIED TWICE AGAINST ST MIRREN

For the first goal Robertson has the dodgy VAR inconclusive lines to fall on. Plus his own decision on when the ball left Yang’s foot as he shot for goal. The image isn’t automated, the SFA don’t use technology to decide when the ball is played. They rely on judgement from their officials.

That decision can go either way. Celtic fans know what to expect in these cases.

Strangely in the post match media conference Peter Martin claimed that the VAR lines weren’t properly calibrated. It is unusual for anyone in legacy media to break ranks.

The second disallowed goal just takes things way too far.

Robertson was unable to get VAR lines. The assistant referee hadn’t flagged. There is absolutely no grounds for disallowing what would have been Shim Mheuka’s first Celtic goal.

To legitimise his gut feeling Robertson called Ryan Lee over to the monitor. The match referee had the same evidence as Robertson had, NOT ENOUGH to disallow a goal. The goal was disallowed.

JOE NEWELL HANDBALL AND THE BEN NYGREN PENALTY CLAIM

In the incident above Joe Newell twice used his arm before shooting the ball into the net.

On VAR duty Roberson didn’t see the double use of Newell’s arm.

Last night he was able to spot that Mheuka was offside without the use of VAR cameras or lines.

Later in the match against Hibs there was another incident against Celtic.

Josh Campbell used both hands to push Ben Nygren off the pitch while he was in the penalty box.

Robertson chose not to get involved.

His good pal David Dickinson raced to the scene to book Liam Scales for the follow up.

Robertson, Dickinson and assistant referee Calum Scott saw the incident clearly. Celtic were denied a penalty.

Last night Gordon Duncan would have been alerted, the SFA need to get their stories out first.

Duncan, who presents The Willie Show to whitewash VAR issues on Sky Sports is well connected.

As a reward the SFA gave him a month long jolly to the World Cup Finals to present some jolly You Tube content to amuse Scotland fans.

This week legacy media outlets will push some half-baked excuses to justify the decisions that went against Celtic.

Fortunately for them there won’t be a hint of complaint from Celtic. Not even a surprised and disappointed statement. At most one of Celtic’s favoured messengers will be informed that the club is deeply concerned or have been asking questions behind the scenes.

There will be Glasgow Derbies over the next two weekends.

Robertson has set the standard. Celtic fans know exactly what to expect from Collum’s favoured officials.
