Fear and loathing- Kris Boyd’s living nightmare

Kris Boyd endured a horrible weekend, not the type he anticipated when he told Sky Sports that this season’s SPFL Premiership trophy was heading for Ibrox.

Despite falling for the spin and hype over Micky Beale and Phil Clement only to end up looking like the thick cousin of the Village Idiot the former Scotland striker just can’t bring himself to predict a Celtic title win.

The hoops have won the last 13 titles played out in front of fans with only the freaky lockdown title eluding Scotland’s most successful club.

Boyd has had a ringside seat for the most dominant period of success in Scottish football history but refuses to bow to reason and reality as he shares his wisdom with Sky Sports and the Scottish Sun.

After suffering through Dundee’s 1-1 draw at Ibrox the last place that Boyd wanted to go to was Aberdeen where he is loathed and detested by the Dons supporters as much as by the visiting Celtic support.

Celtic haven’t lost at Aberdeen since 2016, a fact that is never far from Boyd’s limited memory, the inevitable happened again on Sunday to compound the hurt from Ibrox the day before.

The Ayrshireman doesn’t possess one per-cent of Chris Sutton’s intellect and wit, when he is hurting badly he can’t hide it with thousands of viewers tuning in to Sky simply to enjoy his frequent meltdowns.

They weren’t disappointed by the lunchtime serving from Pittodrie.

Boyd claimed that Aberdeen winning the Scottish Cup was papering over the cracks before trotting out the lazy, inaccurate yarn that players that succeeded in last season’s Champions League were actually complete flops while pinning the blame for their transfer fees on Rodgers rather than Michael Nicholson.

He spent money last year, though. Trusty can’t get a game, Engels can’t get a game – Idah wouldn’t be in the team if he didn’t have to be. I kind of get the feeling as a club they are quite happy winning domestically.

Where else are they going to go in Europe? Do you drop into the Europa League and maybe get a run in that? Then you don’t have the finances of the Champions League. Celtic are running the football club as a business and they do it really well – does that mean you need to go and sell two or three players to compensate?

You can’t have it all. I think Celtic are quite content going into the Champions League – if they get to the knockout stages, well done. But apart from that they are quite happy winning comfortably domestically, and don’t get me wrong – they will.

Ahead of the SPFL opener at Motherwell Boyd tipped Russell Martin to take the Premiership trophy to Ibrox, after the midweek win over Viktoria Plzen he praised the manager for sorting out the dressing room by making four changes and delivering a route into the Champions League.

After suffering through Saturday’s draw with Dundee which leaves the Ibrox side in seventh place in the Premiership table Boyd seemed to be backtracking on his claims over the brilliance of the Russell Revolution!

Dundee deserve a lot of credit. Steven Pressley came with a way to set up and they had opportunities. They hit Rangers on the counter attack a few times, albeit they (Rangers) went down to 10 men.

For Russell Martin it would be a worry. You go from the highs of Tuesday night and we’ve seen it again from Rangers in Europe.

The result (against Plzen) was very good and there were glimpses in that performance where you would say, ‘okay, there’s something maybe starting to happen’ but there were also phases of play that would worry you.

And last Saturday (against Motherwell) and yesterday….

You look at managers who have come in previously and at the start of their regime they’ve been able to get a reaction out of the players domestically. It doesn’t seem to be happening (for Martin).

Boyd added:

There’s no doubt that a few of them needed a rocket last Saturday and they got that but I look at the Rangers team yesterday.

(Djeidi) Gassama’s come in on the left-hand side and it’s very difficult to judge him against anything from last season – (Ianis) Hagi played there a few times, (Hamza) Igamane sometimes played off that left, (Cyriel) Dessers too.

(Oliver) Antman is just in the door so it’s difficult to compare him to (Vaclav) Cerny but Cerny’s numbers last year were through the roof in terms of goal contributions.

Other than that I don’t really see Rangers having upgraded in any position.

(Nasser) Djiga has done well but he’s on loan.

Leon Balogun made defensive tackles and clearances. I know towards the end he was injured a fair bit but I don’t look at Djiga and think, ‘you’re a massive upgrade on Balogun’.

Max Aarons is definitely not an upgrade on James Tavernier. (Joe) Rothwell has come into the middle of the pitch and I know it’s a different style of play that Rangers are wanting to play right now

But I don’t see him as an upgrade as it stands on (Nico) Raskin. (Lyall) Cameron is a tidy enough little player but Rangers have got a lot of work to do.

The worry for Russell Martin so early in the season will be that Rangers in Europe have managed to find performance but against teams where you would expect them to win it’s not happening.

It seems that Boyd has been duped again by watching the Close Season Cup and Transfer Window Trophy end up at Ibrox, the SPFL Premiership table might look painful at the moment but could soon be looking much much worse for the Sky Sports pundit and the hipster manager that he tipped to topple Brendan Rodgers.
