Bullying- Sutton gets it spectacularly wrong over Celtic boycott

Chris Sutton has accused fans boycotting the Celtic v Dundee match of bullying!

It is anything but. On Tuesday night a vote was taken at a meeting of the Celtic Fans Collective, the following morning an announcement was made.

The Collective, a body of over 400 different Celtic groups was INVITING fans to boycott the match against Dundee.

They understand that it is a delicate issue. Many fans have been boycotting Celtic this season, it turns their stomach to pay in to watch the decline engineered by Michael Nicholson.

Thousands have joined in and backed the Not Another Penny campaign. Not all but a significant number.

Merchandise sales have taken a severe hit. Estimates of the impact vary, all three first team kits are heavily discounted in the club sites.

THE COLLECTIVE FAILURE OF CORPORATE CELTIC

The Celtic Fans Collective have tried everything to coax Celtic into operating in a modern professional manner. The club has no interest in changing their ways other than media sound-bites followed by nothing.

Since the start of 2025 Celtic fans have watched

  • Kyogo get sold with no replacement to date
  • Kuhn get sold with no replacement to date
  • No attempt made at qualifying for the Champions League
  • Brendan Rodgers engineered out the club
  • Wilfried Nancy appointed and sacked after eight matches in 33 days
  • Three changes in management over three months
  • Less money spent in the January transfer window than Kilmarnock or St Johnstone
  • An annual eight figure payment of Corporation Tax to HMRC.

And Sutton thinks that Season Ticket holders should put all that aside to pay extra for a February cup tie at home to Dundee that is live on Saturday night TV!

Going to the match tonight, whether fans like it or not is an endorsement of the current board and how they run Celtic.

With an interim manager, an interim Chairman and a team overloaded with players that will be elsewhere in June.

A reasoned argument has been set out for those thinking of boycotting tonight’s match.

Respect is genuinely given to those that still feel the need to turn up and support the players on the park.

In response clown like Lawrence Donegan, Siamese Bhoy and many others are attacking the Collective round the clock.

Facebook Is heaving with uber fans crowing about their superiority because they are backing the un-managed decline led by Nicholson.

Sometimes it seems that Sutton pays too much attention to his Daily Record colleagues as he attacks concerned Celtic fans.

Too much time spent with Kris Boyd and Keith Jackson is bound to have an impact. Sutton also found Brian Wilson’s five minute interview including the fictional ‘I met four lads in the city centre’ encouraging!

Celtic, fans, Collective

In the Daily Record Sutton admitted to the failings of the January transfer window then added:

I believe this planned boycott for tonight’s Scottish Cup tie against Dundee is completely counter-productive.

What do you suggest to bring about change, modernisation of Celtic?

This is the last thing O’Neill, Celtic and the new players coming in, need.

I understand the frustration. Goodness knows, I’ve not been shy at criticising the club and the way they have operated this season.

The window was unconvincing again at best, with O’Neill and Shaun Maloney running around trying to source and sign players.

It just reeked of desperation and a complete lack of structure or planning. Julian Araujo and Tomas Cvancara have shown promise but you can’t tell me Adamu and Mvuka were long term targets.

Again, just like the summer window, see Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Sebastian Tounekti. Just leave the same people in charge for the massive summer rebuild Chris?

SUTTON CALLS OUT THE BULLIES

Supporters have every right to be up in arms at the way this season has gone.

But boycotting games is another matter. I’m not going to tell people how to support their club and they have every right to protest or whatever.

It’s this pressure on others not to go to a game that bothers me. It’s almost like bullying.

Absolute nonsense. It is nothing like bullying. Either Sutton doesn’t understand the situation or the definition of bullying.

It’s sometimes difficult to separate the online noise and the reality, but I always feel fans just want to go to games and watch their teams.

Yes, they might moan, they can get angry and make those feelings known about how things are going, whether it’s a manager failing or a board malfunctioning.

But they still want to go to matches. A lot of fans will have already bought tickets, they might want to go with their kids and friends, like most weeks. A lot won’t want to get involved in all the off-the-field politics.

It wasn’t so long ago there were banners saying, ‘back the team, sack the board’.

Repeatedly the board don’t back the team, why encourage them?

Boycotting might send a message to the people in power but it is not backing the team.

There are a lot of new players in this team and they are in the thick of the title race and still in the cup, as well as Europe.

There is a lot to play for, and it could still be a memorable season with O’Neill leading the club to silverware despite it all.

    Bullying or not, it’s immaterial.
This kind of action is literally the only thing that will make the suits squirm.
Empty seats, and loads of them, cannot be avoided by the TV cameras, therefor the reason for the empty seats will draw comment.
Anything else and the suits pay no heed.
As long as the stadium is full, they just will not take the situation seriously.

Boycott the cup games but attend the league games, the suits need to be challenged by action. They ignore everything else! TV tonight for me, COYBIG

Sutton is usually pretty much bang on when it comes to Celtic football club and again is bang on. By boycotting the cup match (or the attemp to boycott) it’s only going to harm the team on the park leave it until the season ticket renewal time then boycott that might bring some changes but boycotting tonight’s match is not going to achieve anything might actually blow up in your faces.

Strange logic, you’d need to explain that one, I can’t criticise what I can’t understand.

Managing a club like Celtic should be a joy to work with but the board have proved time and time again its them and us. This board has absolutely no ambition. The only thing their interested in is lining their own pockets, Celtic FC means nothing to them its only a business. The people who care about the club (the supporter) needs to drive them out because their imposters who don’t have the club at heart

You and Simon should have a chat, maybe you’ll make sense to each other, cause you’se certainly have the rest of us baffled at what you’re attempting to say.

If we don’t boycott now then when.
Do we wait till apathy sets in and the top teir is closed.
The rebuild we face this summer is horrendous, no manager and a few quality player left.
Nicholson ignored at best in football circles.
Some will fight for the cause some will wait on others to do the fighting.
    Not unlike the 90s.

We are the long suffering bullied who’ve had enough of watching Dick Dastardly and his board of football non-descript administrators/puppets running our club into even Scottish mediocrity.
