Celtic appear to be close to signing two goalkeepers in the space of a week with Viljami Sinisalo strongly linked with a move today.
On Friday night Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Kasper Schmeichel was in advanced negotiations to join the hoops, being reunited with Brendan Rodgers who he worked with at Leicester City.
Turning 38 later this year Schmeichel isn’t going to be in the position long term, in what appears to be a rare case of forward planning Viljami Sinisalo of Aston Villa has been linked with Celtic by someone who is In The Know more often than not.
Former Celtic View reporter David Friel seems to have a regular supply of Celtic stories, in February 2021 he managed to get the scoop that Neil Lennon was stepping down with John Kennedy taking over as caretaker.
It takes very strong contacts to break a story like that 10 hours before the Stock Market announcement, today in The Sun Friel reveals:
Meanwhile, Celts are closing in on signing another goalkeeper. Rodgers wants to make Aston Villa’s Viljami Sinisalo Schmeichel’s understudy.
If Sinisalo is signed it won’t be to play in the Lowland League, clearly a development plan as understudy to Schmeichel has been presented which will involve playing in domestic cup ties.
Over the last three seasons Joe Hart barely missed a match, Ben Siegrist played in two League Cup ties at the start of the 22/23 season before dropping to third choice behind Scott Bain who started one match last season, when Hart was suspended for the September win over Motherwell.
Sinisalo has been loaned out to Burton Albion and Exeter City over the last season, playing 45 matches in League One last season under Gary Caldwell.
With a year left to run on his contract Villa will be keen to cash in on the 22-year old this summer, a deal including sell-on options to Celtic could work out for all parties.
