The worrying Maik Nawrocki rumour

Concerns about the fitness of Maik Nawrocki were raised at a meeting with Brendan Rodgers on Wednesday night.

Alongside the dramatic news about the fitness of Daizen Maeda the Celtic boss seemed to be talking very freely at a Q and A evening with Investors on Wednesday night.

Rodgers was speaking to fans, answering their questions and fully aware that his comments would soon be out in the public domain and trending.

By 9pm on Wednesday Celtic fans were sharing the comments about Maeda’s expected return against Hearts on May 11, by Thursday the legacy media had started to pick up and publish what tuned-in fans had been discussing overnight.

Recruitment is one of the biggest concerns for Celtic fans with Rodgers having to deal with four disastrous windows under the leadership of Mark Lawwell.

Including players out on loan Celtic currently have over 30 first team players with around a dozen happily sitting on long term contracts knowing that they have virtually no chance of being picked by Rodgers.

Almost all of the summer 2023 signings fall into that category- Marco Tilio and Kwon Hyeok-kyu were sent out on loan in January with Odin Thiago Holm and Gus Lagerbielke unable to make the bench for first team matches.

Maik Nawrocki at £4.2m from Legia Warsaw was the most expensive summer signing, arriving from the same club as Josip Juranovic two years earlier.

The suggestions about his fitness sound very concerning, effectively it seems that the defender requires to be rebuilt with all hopes being pinned on Nawrocki returning to pre-season ready to play twice a week.

Three matches into his Celtic career the Polish u-21 internationalist suffered a hamstring injury late on in the League Cup defeat at Kilmarnock on August 20, he didn’t play again until December 30 when he came off the bench in the Glasgow Derby and impressed alongside Liam Scales.

So far he has started eight matches for Celtic, a flying start is required next season if Nawrocki is to avoid being tagged alongside the majority of the Lawwell deals currently draining Celtic at every level.
