Sportscene goes into hiding as Celtic are denied penalty

Sportscene didn’t want to know it as Celtic were denied a clear penalty during their 3-1 win over St Johnstone.

In their last SPFL fixture Brendan Rodgers’ side were the victims of a ridiculous decision away to Hearts as John Beaton prompted Don Robertson to look at an incident where the ball struck Tomoki Iwata’s arm.

With a number of players jumping for a high ball the Celtic midfielder knew little about what was happening as the ball broke off him and was cleared from the penalty box.

Yesterday there was a much more clear cut incident in the 26th minute of the match, with the game goal-less it was critical regardless of Celtic’s record with penalty kicks.

Luke Anderson cleared one effort off the line when the rebound fell to Daizen Maeda inside the six yard box.

From around two yards out Maeda shoots for goal, Anderson moves towards the ball with his left arm swinging slowly and firmly to block the net bound shot. All of the Celtic players close by appealed for a penalty.

Within 30 seconds the ball had been cleared out the park, referee Euan Anderson stopped play as the incident was reviewed by Chis Graham in the VAR studio.

There was around a two minute delay, he clearly suspected something strange had happened but after a couple of reviews Graham decided that an arm hadn’t been used to deny Celtic a goal.

He was so sure of his decision that he didn’t request Anderson should take a review on the pitchside monitor.

Saturday night Sportscene is often used by the SFA to get their bizarre interpretations of the Laws of the Game out to the public, the latest explanation on Goldson’s Law.

Strangely, last night they remained silent with no explanation over the VAR review and the decision not to award Celtic a penalty. In a tight title race goal difference could be a factor at the end of the season.

On March 28 Brendan Rodgers has to answer a Notice of Complaint after describing John Beaton as incompetent following the 2-0 defeat away to Hearts on March 3.
