‘Been tracking’ Celtic linked with deal to sign Nicolas Kuhn

Nicolas Kuhn is being reported as someone that Celtic are eyeing for a January move.

The report comes from David Friel of The Sun who has a good track record on insider news at Celtic, in February 2021 he reported on the departure of Neil Lennon the evening before the Stock Market announcement.

Kuhn is halfway through his second season at Rapid Vienna, with Ajax, Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig on his CV big things were expected of the 24-year-old but it seems that his career has really got underway in Austria.

Over the last year Celtic have build an informal relationship with Admira Wacker which should give them a deep knowledge of the Austrian market which is similar to Scotland in a number of ways.

RB Salzburg are by a distance currently the top club in Austria with Rapid in sixth place after 17 matches going into the winter break.

Kuhn mainly plays on the right wing but has been used previously as a striker, according to The Sun any transfer this month would require a fee in the region of £2m

CELTIC are eyeing a January move for Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn.

SunSport understands the Hoops have been tracking the 24-year-old German this season.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to bolster his attacking options in the coming weeks.

Former Ajax and Bayern Munich prospect Kuhn, who can also play as a striker, has emerged on the Hoops’ radar after impressing with Rapid.

The Austrians paid around £500,000 for him 18 months ago and are expected to ask for at least four times that.

Later, the report adds:

A left-sided winger in the mould of Patrick Roberts, the attacker prefers to play off the right.

Kuhn has three goals and seven assists in 22 appearances for Rapid this season and has emerged as a key man.

Capped at every youth level by Germany, he was hailed as a child prodigy as clubs battled for his signature.

Ajax signed him from RB Leipzig for £1.8million five years ago, but he failed to make a first-team breakthrough.

Bayern brought him back to Germany in 2020 but he was limited to B-team games. Kuhn then moved to Rapid 18 months ago and has now established himself as a regular.

Data and scouting site Wyscout recently named him as one of the top 12 ‘chance creators’ in world football. Kuhn is under contract until 2026 but the prospect of a move to Celtic is likely to appeal.

Rapid will be under no pressure to sell Kuhn who is under contract until June 2026.

Having just turned 24 he is in a similar age range of Celtic’s summer signings but with experience from German and Austrian clubs he has a more mainstream pedigree than prospects from South Korea, Australia and Norway.

There doesn’t appear to be much urgency about Celtic’s January transfer activity but that could change once today’s match at St Mirren is over with five players- Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Oh Hyeon-gyu, Yang Hyun-Jun and Marco Tilio- all off to play at the Asian Cup which runs until February 10.
