Cardiff City are reported to be in talks to take David Turnbull to the English Championship.
The midfielder is out of contract in the summer and has been used mainly as a substitute by Brendan Rodgers over the last couple of months.
Over the last six matches Callum McGregor, Matt O’Riley and Paulo Bernardo have been the settled midfield combination with Odin Thiago Holm as back up and Reo Hatate on duty at the Asian Cup.
Turnbull has scored seven goals in his limited playing time this season but could have made his farewell appearance when he came off the bench for the last couple of minutes of Saturday’s victory over Ross County.
At 10.03 this morning, on their transfer blog, Sky Sports reported:
Cardiff City are interested in signing Celtic midfielder David Turnbull.
Cardiff have contacted the Scottish Premiership champions and it is understood talks are continuing.
Turnbull, who joined Celtic in August 2020 from Motherwell, has scored seven times so far this season.
With the lack of arrivals at Celtic so far this month it would be something of a surprise if Turnbull was sold this month with the squad short of goalscorers.
Turnbull was lined up for a move to Celtic in the summer of 2019 but a club medical highlighted a knee issue, the club’s were unable to agree a new deal which saw the midfielder return to Motherwell and undergo surgery while realising that a £3m transfer had slipped away.
He did make a return to action before Lockdown set in but it wasn’t until August 2020 that Celtic renewed their interest in the Scotland u-21 internationalist.
Turnbull was one of the few positives to emerge from the disastrous 20/21 season and started the following season as a first pick for Ange Postecoglou.
During the League Cup Final win over Hibs he suffered a serious hamstring injury, by the time he resumed fitness Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley had established themselves in a title charge.
Now it looks like Turnbull will either join Cardiff for a token fee or stay around to leave in the summer as a free agent.
