Like most Scottish football fans Michael Stewart enjoyed a good belly laugh on Saturday.
Less than a week after the euphoria of chasing Russell Martin out of a job Ibrox fans were feeling the bitter taste of rejection.
For a couple of days they had dreamed of Stevie G and a rerun of their Covid celebrations. A tainted title and rioting in and around George Square.
On Thursday and Friday the messengers fed them the news that they wanted to hear.
It was only a matter of time before their life sized Gerrard cut-outs could be retrieved from the loft.
ALL ABOARD THE GERRARD EXPRESS, AGAIN
It was happening. The American owners had listened, they had sacked the detested vegan Buddhist. Now they had delivered Steven Gerrard. In a club suit, brown brogues, even a poppy in time for the next home match.
And then Raman Bhardwar delivered the devastating news. The deal was off.
Bears poured out their heart-break across social media. Hadn’t they suffered enough?
There was carnage on Kenny Macintyre’s WATP WhatsApp group. All of those articles and programmes prepared for Gerrard’s return wouldn’t see the light of day.
GROUP THERAPY
Group therapy was required.
Stewart was loving it. Even more so since he was booked in for Sunday Sportsound.
In the studio with Macintyre, Billy Dodds and Tom English. Three of the biggest cheerleaders in the business, men that were almost born with red, white and blue pom-poms.
Stewart didn’t miss as he piled more pain onto their shared grief.

Can anyone tell me anything that has happened since the new ownership came in that has been positive?
Macintyre, Dodds and English started to fiddle with their microphones.
Russell Martin’s appointment: questionable. Kevin Thelwell’s appointment: questionable. The player recruitment: questionable.
The hanging on to Russell Martin for, I think, longer than anyone would have expected: questionable.
Now, this Steven Gerrard debacle: questionable
Macintyre starts to question why the ginger, Jambo Nat is on his contacts book.
Stewart hadn’t stopped, far from it.
I’ve seen a lot of people in the last week or so suggesting or talking about Derek McInnes and the Hearts manager as ‘Just go and get him’.
Does someone want to explain to me why a manager who doesn’t have a job [Gerrard], who’s looked at the club and said ‘No’…. Why then would a manager who’s at a club with all the positivity that’s surrounding it, walk away from that, and go into said club that the manager without a job has just said no to?
After that there was tumbleweed in the studio with Macintyre suddenly showing an interest in how Belarus will line up at Hampden.
The pain among legacy media over Gerrard’s withdrawal is real and deep.
They almost had the big name to make their professional lives easy. And hope that Mister Gerrard could end the pain and misery caused by Celtic’s nine year long domestic domination. Now they have neither.
THE GORY AFTERMATH
Danny Rohl isn’t going to muster up any excitement. Online bears are already gunning for the German Russell Martin. Rohl isn’t wanted.
Having helped stoke up the anger towards Martin they are now dealing with the fall out and consequences.
Eight points from seven matches is more than a blip. Tougher fixtures lie ahead, their favourite club looks doomed, the clock is ticking towards a visit from Dundee United. Despite Martin looking doomed way before the wild swimming exercise no Plan B was in place.
The heralded American owners seem clueless, the unique demands of a toxic fan-base has shocked Andrew Cavenagh.
And there is Mikey Stewart- in their studio, in their faces taunting his colleagues while their grief is at its rawest.
