Fresh angle shows why Jefte deserved his Kiev red card

As the meltdown continues over a booking given to Jefte against Dinamo Kiev social media has again provided a simple solution to the ‘controversy’.

Taking a lead from the bleating of Phil Clement and the outrageous coverage from BBC Scotland the second booking for the Brazilian starlet has been the focus in the fall out to Tuesday’s match at Hampden.

An emphasis has been put on the nationality of referee Marco Guida, it is safe to say that he hasn’t been on a social night out with John Beaton and the lads at the Lanarkshire Referees Association.

Nor is he likely to be a guest of Kenny Macintyre on BBC Sportsound.

Starting his first match for his new club Jefte was played out of position on the left wing, picking up a booking after 31 minutes.

There was another foul before half-time that Guida let go, perhaps Jefte thought that he had a licence to do whatever he liked without punishment.

At half-time Clement decided to send on Vaclav Cenry, taking off the wrong winger in Ross McCausland. Even at the age of 21 the Irish winger has more experience than the new signing from Brazil.

Six minutes into the second half it was a decision that A Proper Football Manager was made to regret. Jefre ran towards the incident from some distance, led with his left arm then followed through with the rest of his body to send his opponent to the deck.

It was an easy decision for Guida (the Italian referee) to make, anywhere in Europe it would be a yellow card but the bears in the stadium and in the media couldn’t come to terms with it.

Since showing Jefte his second yellow card it has been open season on the match official who refereed three matches at the European Championships in Germany.

Guida knows his stuff, he’ll be involved in the Champions League matches this season, probably in the knock-out matches, as recently as April he took charge of Atletico Madrid v Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Jefte will be suspended for the first group match in the Europa League, after that he can get used to UEFA referees applying the Laws of the Game equally to both teams.
