Anthony Joseph’s Celtic transfer breakthrough suffers ITK pile on

Revived interest from Celtic in signing Jakob Breum from Go Ahead Eagles proved very short lived. Spectacularly so.

Not long after Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports had tweeted his claim it was being shot down by two of the most reliable sources in the Celtic news circle.

When Stephen McGowan and ‘Harry Brady’ rush onto their Twitter accounts to trash a story you can be very certain that the news is coming from the most reliable of sources.

Joseph is based in London with Sky Sports News but is a name that most Celtic supporters will place some trust in.

Recently he has been a little behind the curve on transfer news but his decision to revive the Breum story would have come from a decent source.

Although during the transfer window it is wise ‘never to say never’ the ‘Celts swoop for Breum’ was very close to that category.

Not only had Celtic been knocked back with three embarrassing bids but Go Ahead had made it quite clear what was going on.

After selling Oliver Antman to Ibrox, Go Ahead chief Jan Willem van Dop suggested that Celtic could learn the art of negotiating from their O** F*** business partners, finishing his comment with a HAHA that summed up the shambles of Celtic recruitment.

Brady and McGowan are unlikely to follow that line but at tea-time on Thursday they were both quick to react to a report that another chapter in failure regarding Breum was underway.

Almost immediately Stephen McGowan was pouring icey cold water on the claim with The Herald reporting:

Go Ahead Eagles are set to hold firm on their £6million valuation of Celtic target Jakob Breum.

And the price tag for the Danish under-21 international is likely to increase if the Parkhead club reach the group stage of the Champions League in Kazakhstan next week.

Wednesday’s goalless draw with Kairat Almaty left hopes of advancing from the play-off round in the balance.

Chants of ‘Sack The Board’ rang out the stadium as supporters voiced their frustration over a lack of quality signings.

One report claims Celtic have ramped up their pursuit of the playmaker by holding fresh talks with Go Ahead chiefs over an agreement.

We understand that is NOT the case and that the last contact between the two parties was last month.

It is surprising to see a Celtic transfer story trashed so quickly.

Joseph is generally in the circle of Celtic transfer news but on this occasion two others who are definitely In The Know appear to have rushed to kill off the Breum transfer link.

It seems very clear that Celtic are being forced into the tightest of corners in the transfer window, one that is self inflicted with most of the problems encountered last summer being repeated.

But, with the critical exception that a repeat this summer could see the club miss out on a likely £40m Champions League payment with a consolation prize of between £10-15m from the Europa League.

Clearly Celtic’s transfer list barely extends beyond Plan B, selling clubs and agents know the circumstances with the transfer fees negotiated for Adam Idah and Arne Engels the proof.

If you reject an offer from Celtic they won’t go elsewhere for a player of similar profile, an analogue club doesn’t have those sort of options.

Celtic will come back with further offers, when you reject them they then offer more than the going rate because time is running out, it is pay over the odds or end up with nothing.

A few months after paying inflated fees for players you then get selected messengers to blame the fees on the manager who had nothing to do with negotiations with easily influenced supporters then warning about the dangers of spending more than £3m on any player.
