‘BBC need to be banned for good’ ‘disgrace of a journalist’ ‘absolute joke of a broadcaster’ Alasdair Lamont shows his true colours

To almost anyone watching the match in Munich last night Celtic put in an incredible 90 plus minutes against Bayern- but not according to BBC reporter Alasdair Lamont.

The Scottish champions created four good chances, more than Bayern Munich could muster with three chances openings for Nicolas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda twice during one period of pressure.

It was an uplifting 45 minutes, Celtic played good controlled football, retained possession and attacked Bayern Munich down the flanks causing problems to their defence.

Lamont saw things differently. Spending your working day in the company of Kenny Macintyre, Jane Lewis, Tom English, Neil McCann and Billy Dodds tends to have that affect. He was gutted that Bayern weren’t comfortably ahead, a goal or two for Harry Kane would have been the icing on his orange sponge.

Rather than examine Celtic’s performance the man on a jolly to Bavaria through the BBC licence fee decided to share his concerns and disappointment over Bayern failing to score, there was fear in what the second half could bring.

Like his mate Macintyre. Lamont has spent hisentire career inside BBC Scotland, knowing that he wouldn’t last five minutes in the commercial sector where you have to graft and deliver to earn a living. Jollies to Munich, Bergamo and Dortmund aren’t handed out on a rota with unlimited expenses to claim back.

To be fair when Lamont says that Bayern weren’t very impressive it is a subject that Lamont is well aware of, it could be the story of his underwhelming career.

One that started with dreams of sharing big European nights and domestic successes with Sir Walter, Coisty and the lads but which has turned into a procession of watching Celtic rack up success after success while the 2012 Tribute Act struggle to mount even a challenge.

Lamont has taken it all very personally, diving into a mid-life crisis by growing a pony-tail and goatee, showing his arty-farty side on Twitter with pictures and comments about obscure groovy bands that he really digs.

Contempt for matters Celtic is nothing new for the BBC hipster, back in October 2021 Celtic put on an impressive display to beat Ferencvaros 2-0 highlighted by a brilliant goal from Kyogo Furuhashi. That game came a few weeks after Malmo visited Glasgow and just before full size Stevie G cardboard cut outs were about to appear in wheely-bins.

Lamont’s misery was obvious, his first question to Ange Postecoglou in the all-in media conference was if he felt that Celtic had deserved the points.

The Sun reported:

Lamont: “Ange, congratulations. Was that a fully deserved three points ultimately for you?”

Ange: “You don’t think?”

Reporter: “No, I’m asking you.”

Ange: “A funny question to start with! I think a well deserved for sure and I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

“I think we controlled the game really well right from the start. They’re a good team. They showed against Leverkusen and Betis.

“I thought we controlled the first half well.

“They had to work really hard to sort of stifle us a little bit but we still created some chances.

“We kind of knew second half, they would tire a little bit because they were working so hard and the game opened up.

“We’ve got a really good goal and after that we thought we could add a couple more.

“They stuck to their task and I thought we were really disciplined right to the end.”

Lamont: “We were saying in commentary, that by his own standards, Kyogo was maybe having a quieter game than usual.

“Finding it a little bit difficult to get into the game almost.

“But it was some way to announce himself into the game. The first goal was a thing of beauty wasn’t it?”

Ange: “Definitely must have been a half glass full commentary today …”

When the action returned to the studio, Gordon said: “Well, Al had a nightmare at the start of that didn’t he? An absolute nightmare.

“I think what we need to do is make sure that Ange gets to listen into the podcast to hear how positive we all were about Celtic’s performance.

Even in among BBC Scotland staff Lamont as known as extreme, someone that genuinely struggles to keep a lid on his bitterness while Macintyre at least tries to be one of the lads and matey to cover up his own pain and hurt at witnessing and discussing success for the team he has hated since getting on the supporters bus from Mull to Ibrox.

Following Tom English’s outburst against Brendan Rodgers on his return to Celtic in June 2023 the state broadcaster has been off the invite list for Celtic media events.

They do have contractual access through contracts with the SFA, SPFL and UEFA.

Lamont’s salary and trip to Munich was entirely funded by licence payers where he was joined by freeloaders like Pat Nevin and a crew of dozens covering BBC Scotland, BBC Five LIVE and BBC One.
