Ally McCoist has gone into full Paranoid Mode following Celtic’s League Cup victory.
Daizen Maeda’s penalty delivered Celtic’s 119th trophy, overcoming a horrendous display from John Beaton and the match officials appointed by spineless Willie Collum.
In the 24th minute Leon Balogun smashed into Reo Hatate’s ankle, reluctantly Beaton produced a yellow card.
Encouraged by that Jefte raked his studs down the Achilles of Nicolas Kuhn as the Celtic winger prepared to control a throw in shortly before half time, again Collum thought that was only worth a booking.
Across most European countries at least one red card would have been issued, Beaton has never been near a top UEFA or FIFA competition despite being the Golden Boy of the SFA, taking charge of three of the five Glasgow Derbies this year.
Into the second half Balogun continued to kick out at Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers, free kicks were awarded but no further action was taken against the veteran defender before he was substituted in the 67th minute.
Speaking to the Parallel Universe provided by the Daily Record, McCoist said:
We used to accuse Celtic of paranoia when they wrote and complained to the SFA over the years. Michael Nicholson made that quip and was probably trying to get a clap from the audience but you can’t be saying that.
There was a time back in the day when Celtic were accused of paranoia and there will be a train of thought that some refereeing decisions are going against Rangers and for Celtic because of that. But that’s not the case.
Referees and officials will make honest mistakes. It was a howler on Sunday but we need to move on. I genuinely believe the officials are doing their best. I think the standard is bang average at best but there’s no way we can start picking and choosing officials. It’s not on. You can have a moan because they got it wrong, 100 per cent, and they have been stood down for the weekend.
Rangers fans, correctly by the way, feel aggrieved because that’s not the only decision. You go back to Kemar Roofe’s goal at Ibrox, Morelos goal at Celtic Park and all that stuff. These are decisions that just go against you. They are wrong decisions but you have to take them on the chin.
Not a peep about Jefte or Balogun, no mention of Robin Propper holding Cameron Carter-Vickers shirt at the second goal lost by Celtic, as we discovered yesterday every shirt pull is a free kick.
As McCoist and the lads at Record Sport know, Celtic are Scotland’s most successful club, now onto 119 despite paying Income Tax and National Insurance on all employees. In six months time the hoops could well be champions of Scotland for the 55th time.
