The January transfer window will have to go some to outdo the claim made today that Celtic are interested in signing Jonjoe Kenny!
Back in the dark, dark days of January 2021 the defender arrived on loan from Everton as a replacement for Jeremie Frimpong and came to be associated with the worst season this century
It was a case of wrong player, wrong club and wrong time as Kenny joined a Celtic side in free fall with Neil Lennon resigning less than a month after the loan signing was made.
Very quickly it became clear that this was a loan deal that wouldn’t be made permanent, after 16 appearances he left without any fanfare.
Picking up on the story which originated from Bild, Liga Zwei reports:
Bournemouth and Celtic Glasgow interested
Jonjoe Kenny, whose contract expires at the end of the season, also wants to play in the top division again next year at the latest. According to “Sport Bild” (edition of December 11, 2024), there are several interested parties for the 27-year-old right-back, who has been able to advertise himself with one goal and six assists in the first 15 match days, particularly with his offensive qualities. The Englishman is said to be on the list of AFC Bournemouth, currently eighth in the Premier League, and the Scottish major club Celtic Glasgow, which is represented in the Champions League.
Because Hertha BSC cannot really afford to lose Kenny on a free transfer in the summer, it is even possible that he will leave during the winter break. This would probably mean an additional seven-figure income, but would also mean a loss of quality, possibly with significant consequences for the club’s chances of promotion.

A year after the signing from Everton, Celtic signed Jonny Kenny from Sligo Rovers, that name sent shivers through supporters, providing a flashback to the grim times a year earlier. The young striker is currently doing well on loan at Shamrock Rovers.
Alongside Albian Ajeti, Vasilias Barkas, Diego Laxalt and Boli Bolingoli, Kenny is one of the names most associated with the disastrous season of 20/21.
Breaking into the Everton side in season 2017/18 there were high hopes for Kenny at Goodison, emerging into the side with 16 caps for the England u-21 side. That potential was never realised, prior to moving to Celtic he had a spell on loan at Schalke.
Germany has been a recurring feature in his career, after his Celtic loan he moved to Hertha Berlin. At one stage he was joined in the Bundesliga by Frimpong, Josip Juranovic and Cristian Gamboa who had all played right-back at Celtic.
Now in his second season playing in Bundesliga 2 it is quite a stretch to see his form earning a January move to Celtic or Bournemouth.
With Tony Ralston as back up to Alastair Johnston Celtic are very well covered at right-back.
Some AI based websites are treating the Kenny rumour seriously.
