Celtic have been linked with an interest in signing Mateusz Bogusz from Los Angeles FC.
Brendan Rodgers expects Celtic to sign two midfielders to replace Matt O’Riley, with Michael Nicholson deep in negotiations with Brighton he really should be well aware of the expectations of his manager.
With 10 days left in the transfer window the club’s CEO hasn’t yet added a single outfield player to last season’s squad.
Bogusz has the profile of a project player but the 8-10 million euros price tag would have covered three of last season’s arrivals masterminded by the now departed Mark Lawwell.
After the experience of last summer Rodgers has clearly put his foot down with quality the only criteria with a trusted first team squad of around 14 players with the same amount unlikely to get near starting place unless in the event of an emergency.
Last season O’Riley was the player that benefitted most from the arrival of Rodgers, taking his game to a new level with a regular supply of goals and assists.
Bogusz has impressive stats at LAFC in the MLS but with the opening Champions League tie four weeks away it is asking a lot for any new signing to make an instant impact let alone step into the hole left by O’Riley’s expected exit.
Polish website Meczyki reports:
Celtic Glasgow are seriously interested in Mateusz Bogusz. According to our information, talks are already underway to complete this transfer before the summer transfer window closes.
Bogusz is having a great time in the US. This MLS season, he has scored thirteen goals and assisted five for LAFC. In total, he has scored sixteen goals and assisted six times in other competitions. It is no wonder that they will attract interest from Europe. It is very likely that he will also receive a call-up to the Polish national team for the Nations League matches in September next week.
Bogusz, who played in La Liga 2 before moving to MLS and previously represented Leeds United, could now move up a level. According to our information, Celtic Glasgow have approached him. The Scots are determined to sign the Polish midfielder. Talks are currently underway with the player’s club and to agree an individual contract.
The 22-year-old is doing great in the offensive formation of the team from California. It is difficult to assign him one position. He is very versatile. This season he has shown a range of different skills – first of all he showed off several great shots from distance. Today only four players in the league have more goals than him. Bogusz can show off one more goal than, for example, Luis Suarez or Leo Messi.
The Pole’s situation is dynamic. Celtic Glasgow is in talks with LAFC about the transfer fee, which should be around 8-10 million euros. Individual contract terms should not be a problem. Celtic Glasgow is the current Scottish champion and a participant in the Champions League. As of today, it seems that this would be a very good direction in Bogusz’s career. There is still a long way to go before the negotiations are concluded.
There seems little reason for a Polish website to link a player with a Scottish club unless there is genuine interest, the report does state early on that there is serious interest then ends up with noting that negotiations have a long way to go.
As well as O’Riley there are growing reports of interest of interest in Kyogo Furuhashi from Manchester City, if both were to leave Celtic in the next 10 days Nicholson would have a lot of explaining to do before selling Champions League packages to the #Celticfamily.
