Adam Idah moves a step closer to Celtic deal

The pieces in the Adam Idah jigsaw are falling into place with Norwich showing interest in signing Tom Cannon from Leicester City.

It is now 11 weeks since Idah scored the decisive goal for Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final with the inevitable permanent transfer still to be completed.

A reported offer of £4m was rejected at the start of July. There has been no formal follow up with both clubs returning to pre-season training and getting friendly matches underway.

Over the last week a template appears to have been played out to ease the passage of a transfer for all involved culminating in Idah being booed by a section of Norwich fans in a 3-1 from St Pauli at Carrow Road.

There was no need for Johannes Thorup to mention that Idah had missed the team flight to Austria, that could easily have been kept in-house but by going public he painted a target on Idah’s back that pushed the striker closer to the exit door sign posted for Glasgow.

The Pink Un in Norwich is closest to the action, this morning they reported:

Norwich City have joined the race for Leicester striker Tom Cannon, according to reports.

Transfer guru Alan Nixon is reporting on Sunday morning that the Canaries have joined Championship rivals Sheffield United and West Brom in the hunt for Cannon, who may be available on loan later in the window.

That link comes amid continued interest in Adam Idah from Celtic, who saw an opening bid of £4m rejected by City last month. The Irishman is believed to want a return to Scotland after a successful loan posting there last season

Cannon, 21, was of interest to City last summer as they stepped up their search for a striker after Josh Sargent’s ankle injury. He eventually joined Leicester and Norwich signed Hwang Ui-Jo on a season long loan.

In 16 appearances for the Foxes, Cannon only scored three times, but is highly rated having spent the developmental years of his career at Everton. A successful loan spell at Preston in 2022/23 saw interest rise.

The report adds that an injury to Jamie Vardy has seen the pause button pressed on a temporary loan switch for Cannon.

Celtic are expected to return to the table for Idah before the end of the transfer window, but Johannes Hoff Thorup confirmed that the Irishman will form part of his plans in next week’s Championship opener against Oxford United after being disciplined internally last week for missing the team’s flight to Austria.

Having finally secured the return of Paulo Bernardo last week there is now an expectation that Idah will be the next ‘arrival’ at Celtic.

There is likely to be a twist or two along the road to completing the deal as both clubs save face, once Norwich bring in another striker the way will be cleared for the completion of the Idah saga.

“There was no need for Johannes Thorup to mention that Idah had missed the team flight to Austria, that could easily have been kept in-house but by going public he painted a target on Idah’s back that pushed the striker closer to the exit door sign posted for Glasgow”.

I totally agree with you Joe. This is a very good point. Norwich are using the situation to Adam’s detriment, which I find totally unsavoury. After doing that, I don’t see why Adam would possibly want to stay with them. As for the booing Norwich fans – uuuurghh! Should Adam return to Paradise, he will be in a good place.
Just to make another simple point, Celtic and Brendan brought out the best in Adam and improved his development, so they know his value. Norwich did not improve his development and were not playing him. Thus they obviously do not know his true value – they are merely greedily guessing.

Basically this, the Bernardo signing and, to an extent, Schmeichel for Hart, means we have spent the entire window running to stand still with a squad that was already inadequate and our weakest in years. O’Riley goes and we won’t even have done that, especially if Hatate leaves too and we get the old “but it was too late to sign anyone to replace them” sob story. We have needed a new LB and at least one new, first team ready CB since last summer. Where are they? We now need at least one, probably two strikers (with Oh gone, as well as Idah). Midfield will also need beefing up again in the highly likely event at least one of our star players goes. Cover for CalMac is probably needed too, as I doubt his body will take 60 plus games a season for too much longer. Much as I like him and admire him for what he’s achieved for us, we also need to be thinking about how we bed players in to replace him and guys like Forrest, when playing the amount of games we do, at the standard we all expect, inevitably becomes too much for them.

Hope Adam Idah signs soon and gets this nonsense over and done with.
The Bhoys will be getting us off soon today, in any other fukkin league we’d have started it all yesterday but not in Bitter Wee Scotland. Anyway, I’ve only one thing more to say:
COME ON YOU BHOYS IN GREEN!
