Viljami Sinisalo was a surprise passenger as Celtic flew out to the United States this afternoon for a three match pre-season trip.
From Monday morning there was strong speculation that he was a transfer target for Brendan Rodgers but as most fans know Celtic aren’t known for their swift work in the transfer market.
The social media release is almost taken for granted with some great or goofy work put in before the big REVEAL even when it is widely trailed that a transfer is about to take place.
No signings have been announced by Celtic but among the standard pictures of players at Glasgow Airport today there was one unfamiliar face that caught fans by surprise.
It was an instant headline with Sinisalo all decked out as he boarded the flight with his new team-mates.
Not many players move from Exeter City to Celtic but via Aston Villa the 22-year-old keeper has made that move although he is far from a stranger to Scottish football.
As recently as June he was in action against some of his new team-mates when Finland spoiled the party by drawing 2-2 in Scotland’s send off to the European Championships. The new Celtic ‘keeper was a second half substitute at Hampden.
That match at Hampden isn’t Sinisalo’s only experience of the Scottish game, back in the Lockdown season of 20/21 he played in 29 matches on loan to Ayr United in the Scottish Championship.
With further loan spells at Burton Albion and Exeter, where he played 50 matches last season in League One, Sinisalo is about as experienced as you will find in a 22-year-old goalkeeper. With the bonus of four full international caps.
Kasper Schmeichel is expected to get the full treatment when he joins Celtic which looks like giving the hoops two very capable ‘keepers battling it out for a first team place after three seasons in which Joe Hart was barely under threat.
