He loves breaking records- Gravesen endorses Celtic’s Dane deal

Thomas Gravesen is delighted over Kasper Schmeichel’s expected move to Celtic.

After leaving Leicester City in 2022 the Danish international has been at Nice and Anderlecht but Joe Hart’s retirement has created a unique opportunity.

Working with Brendan Rodgers again will be a big draw for Schmeichel but at the age of 37 not many players get the offer of Champions League football, regular crowds of over 60,000 and a very realistic chance of winning trophies.

It seems to be an appealing option for the legendary goalkeeper with Gravesen understanding the appeal more than most.

His own move to Celtic from Real Madrid in 2006 turned out to be a massive disappointment but his own experience hasn’t left him bitter and disenfranchised.

The opposite seems to be the case with Gravensen glowing when he spoke to Tipsbladen about the appeal of Celtic to the 105 times capped goalkeeper:

This shows a Kasper Schmeichel who is ready to take a step to one of the big clubs in Scotland. It shows that he is thinking that it is not over yet. He has plenty of opportunities at Celtic! It’s the Scottish league, yes, but you play the Champions League every single year.

It’s called the battle for the championship and the Champions League, so for me it’s a no-brainer.

You expect them to play for the championship and win it every year. He is a winner and he has the winning gene in him. He was part of the long streak under Åge Hareide, where they did not lose in 34 games, and the possibility of making such streaks in Scotland exists.

That’s the kind of thing he loves – breaking records and playing at the highest level. I actually see that he can go close to a record for the fewest goals scored against him – that’s how good I still think he is.

Schmeichel is expected to be announced as a Celtic player today, joining up with his new team-mates tomorrow in the USA on Thursday.

With Viljami Sinisalo signing from Aston Villa on Tuesday Celtic looked to have quickly covered what looked like a problem position following Hart’s decision to retire.

Schmeichel will be expected to start the season as first choice but the 22-year-old Finn looks a very capable deputy who could play in cup ties and step in for Schmeichel at a moments notice.
