Currently closing the deal- Celtic exit on the cards

Belgian side Genk seem to be close to signing Oh Hyeon-gyu.

The Korean striker has played in Celtic’s pre-season friendlies against Ayr United and Queens Park but has played any competitive football since February.

Oh has a decent scoring record at Celtic but his call up for the Asian Cup in January coupled with the arrival of Adam Idah on loan from Norwich City sent him down the pecking order with Idah and Kyogo Furuhashi competing for one striking place as Celtic closed down on the title.

Genk were linked with a £4m move for Oh a month ago, that deal seems to be progressing with a respected Belgian source close to putting DONE DEAL on it.

Turning around a £2m profit on someone that wasn’t making the matchday squad at the end of last season is clearly good business but intensifies the focus on incoming business at Celtic, particularly the need for strikers.

It would seem a high risk move to agree to unless negotiations to sign Idah are close to completion, Norwich play Northampton in a friendly tomorrow with their team-sheet carrying extra interest.

While Kyogo has come up with the big match goals in his three seasons at Celtic it would be dangerous to be over reliant on the former Vissel Kobe striker.

Having Giorgos Giakoumakis and Idah competing with and alternating with Kyogo has been highly beneficial with five substitutes available for use.

With 23 days to go until the start of the SPFL season Celtic have yet to make a signing, next Sunday they face DC United followed by Manchester City and Chelsea in the space of a week.

Brendan Rodgers is hoping to add to the squad that flies to the USA but there doesn’t appear to be any deals in the pipeline- unless Oh’s departure is dependent on signing Idah or another strikerr.
