Callum McGregor has laughed off the latest Ibrox hardman, Tom Lawrence who was meant to ‘shackle’ the Celtic skipper during Saturday’s Glasgow Derby.
Urged on by out of work managers Stuart McCall and Barry Ferguson the Ibrox players were urged to put the boot into the Celtic skipper in order to nullify his influence.
Radio Scotland, Go Radio and the Daily Record were happy to carry those wishes in the build up to Saturday’s match, if a German, Swiss or Hungarian player comes out with the content next month there will be a national outrage.
Willie Collum will have been well aware of the comments and the background to Saturday’s match, as expected he was determined to keep his cards in his pocket which allowed Clement’s players to put the boot in without any real punishment.
Dujon Sterling and Mohamed Diomanse were both kicking out at opponents in the early stages with Lawrence apparently selected to ‘sort out McGregor’ with Todd Cantwell the other option available to A Proper Football Manager.
Lawrence, who once took some Derby County team-mates for a drive while almost at double the drink driving limit, was no match for McGregor and was barely able to put in a worthwhile challenge or foul.
The Celtic skipper had licence to roam anywhere across the midfield with Lawrence reluctant to go as far as the centre circle for fear of leaving behind gaps that the champions could exploit.
Cantwell has failed so badly in his attempts to stifle Celtic that he remained an unused substitute on Saturday with Clement preferring to send on Ross McCausland, Kemar Roofe, Nico Raskin and Scott Wright to make an impact on the match.
McGregor revels in the fixture and the attention that he gets from opponents, in February 2022 he memorably questioned the bravery of Borna Barisic.
Scouse hardman John Lundstram didn’t make it to half-time in Saturday’s match which could be his final appearance for the Ibrox Tribute Act before joining Trabzonspor as a free agent.
