Serial failure Lawwell resigns- Man In The Know breaks the big news

Mark Lawwell has resigned as Celtic’s Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment according to a report in The Sun.

Recruitment has become a thorny topic at Celtic over the last few transfer windows with an apparent curb on players over the age of 24 with only Maik Nawrocki costing more than £3m over the last three windows.

When Brendan Rodgers returned as manager last June he complimented the brilliant work being done by Lawwell, the son of former Celtic CEO but since then the Irishman has been increasingly critical of the constraints that he has been working under.

After Celtic’s Champions League campaign was ended by Lazio in November Rodgers revealed that when he had arrived he had highlighted the need to sign four quality players.

During the January window only Nicolas Kuhn on a £3m deal from Rapid Vienna was added followed by an 11th hour loan deal for Adam Idah that had no right to buy clause.

There has been intense speculation in recent weeks that Lawwell would be leaving Celtic, just before 4pm today The Sun reported:

MARK LAWWELL has resigned as Celtic’s head of recruitment.

SunSport understands the Hoops’ scouting chief has stepped down to pursue new challenges within the game.

Joe Dudgeon, Celtic’s lead first team scout who joined from the City Group last year, has also resigned from his position.

They will both be placed on gardening leave until the end of the season.

Lawwell was appointed as Celtic’s head of first team scouting and recruitment in the summer of 2022, after ten years at the City Group.

That report was from David Friel, a former Celtic View reporter who exclusively revealed the news in February 2021 that Neil Lennon had resigned ahead of the Stock Market announcement.

With news of this magnitude you can be certain that Friel has got it from the highest possible authority.

To laughter at the Celtic AGM in November Michael Nicholson claimed that Peter’s laddie had been forced on the club by Ange Postecoglou- whatever he does next Mark won’t be getting anywhere close to a recruitment job at Spurs,
