West Bromwich Albion are reported to be showing interest in signing Mikey Johnston.
The winger has been involved in most of Celtic’s matches over the last two months but at the age of 24 he has still to establish himself as a regular starter.
A loan spell at Vitoria Guimaraes last season opened up a place in the Irish international squad but returning to Celtic he found fresh competition from Luis Palma, Marco Tilio and Yang Hyun-jun.
Clearly looking for improvement in that area of the team Nicolas Kuhn is Celtic’s only January signing to date.
While discussing Liel Abada’s complex situation in the Daily Mail, McGowan noted:
With the conflict in Gaza showing no sign of relenting, a six-month loan move could offer time and space to review the situation in the summer, with promotion-chasing West Bromwich Albion set to join Watford, Southampton and clubs from Ligue One in France and the German Bundesliga in asking Celtic if they would consider a short-term deal. West Brom are also exploring a move for Abada’s Parkhead team-mate Mikey Johnston.
The demands of the 46 match English Championship would certainly toughen up Johnston who has only started four matches this season.
There appears to a be a few moving parts in this transfer jigsaw with Kuhn arriving at Celtic and uncertainty over the future of Abada.
Interest in the Israeli winger is likely to be West Brom’s priority with Johnston a back up option, almost certainly they will have other wingers in mind as they look to push themselves into the Play Off places.
There has been little movement so far this month at Celtic but from McGowan’s report the final nine days are likely to see things get much busier.
