Phil Clement is targetting four trophies after being appointed as Micky Beale’s successor this morning.
The new man takes over a car crash squad that is seven points behind Celtic in the SPFL Premiership, facing Hearts in the semi-final of the League Cup and locked in a four way tie in their Europa League group following a 2-1 defeat to ARIS Limassol in Cyprus.
Crucially Clement has secured a contract until May 2027 which follows the deals that Giovanni van Bronckhorst got until May 2025 with Micky Beale’s contract running until May 2026.
This morning the club website announced:
Clement now arrives in Glasgow to begin a three-and-a-half year contract as the 19th manager of Rangers FC, subject to receipt of a work permit.
Speaking upon his appointment, Clement said: “I am honoured to have been appointed as the new manager of Rangers Football Club and I’d like to thank the board for giving me this opportunity.
“I am hugely excited by this chance to achieve success at one of Europe’s most iconic clubs across four competitions in what remains of this season and beyond.
“I am looking forward to meeting with the players in the coming days and to meeting our supporters at next Saturday’s home match with Hibernian, as we set out together to create a successful, winning Rangers.”
The hasty nature of the appointment is highlighted by the fact that there was no video interview to accompany the announcement, traditionalists will be concerned by a Sunday announcement with the next victim wearing jeans rather than club flannels.
Clement’s last job was in charge of Monaco, being sacked in June after 73 matches in charge with the side finishing last season in sixth place, his successor Adi Hutter having the club in top place in Ligue 1, above Paris Saint Germain.
After spells in charge of Genk and Brugges the new Ibrox boss should have some awareness of duds like Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Rabbi Matondo and Danilo.
Knowing players is one thing, getting them to perform is another task entirely with Clement having to work with the current squad until January when the transfer window opens.
Beale was only able to bring in Todd Cantwell and Nico Raskin in January, it is hard to see where funds will come from for Clement’s Revolution!
One pressing issue is that the contracts of Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Ryan Jack Kemar Roofe and Leon Balogun all expire in May 2024.
