Liam Bonetig is currently on trial with the Celtic B team, playing the second half of the friendly away to Fraserburgh and is in the squad for tonight’s match away to Sligo Rovers.
The teenage defender is halfway through a two year scholarship with Western Sydney Wanderers and is the latest Australian connection to Celtic following quickly on from Ange Postecoglou, Aaron Mooy and Marco Tilio.
During the summer Dylan Corr moved to Raith Rovers with Ewan Otoo along the road at Dunfermline which leaves places to fill in the B team squad. It is unlikely that Bosun Lawal will be playing a third season in the Lowland League.
Western Sydney Wanderers centre-back Liam Bonetig (2005) has been at Celtic in recent weeks. He played for their B team in a friendly against Fraserburgh, scoring a penalty in Celtic’s shootout win. This comes after he won MVP on the Australian Schoolboys’ UK tour in January.

Jackson Irvine came to Celtic in a similar way more than a decade ago, although he only managed one first team appearance he has gone on to have a good career appearing in two World Cup Finals.
With Bonetig in the youth side at Western Sydney Wanderers Celtic are clearly scouting deep into Australia for talent with the club’s profile currently sky high in Oz.
