Jota’s eye-watering Saudi salary is revealed

Jota is poised to pick up a tax free salary of £10m a year by signing for Al Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League.

Midway through Thursday afternoon news emerged from Doha that terms had been agreed with the player who will be set up for life at the age of 24.

Celtic have had two great seasons from Jota but even with a massive profit on the £6m that they paid to Benfica there will be regrets for many fans about his departure.

Another season in the Champions League or a move to a top European side would have been expected but upping sticks for Saudi Arabia is something a bit different.

In the Daily Mail Stephen McGowan reveals the figures behind the deal:

CELTIC are set to sell winger Jota to Saudi Arabian champions Al-Ittihad in a deal worth more than £20million.

Signed from Benfica for £7m last summer, the Portuguese wide man has agreed terms on a life-changing salary in excess of £10m-a-year tax-free.

Real Madrid legend and Ballon D’Or winner Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante have already completed money moves to Al Ittihad.

Coached by Nuno Espirito Santos, a Jota deal is now being finalised by Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes.

Celtic have a number of wingers at the club but the loss of Jota will leave a significant gap in the squad.

Coming off the wing he scored in three Glasgow Derbies as well as away from home against RB Leipzig and Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Celtic start pre-season training next week with Brendan Rodgers expected to discuss that deal and outline his transfer plans with the start of the season five weeks away.
