A football club or a retail outlet? Celtic fans react to huge sales push

Celtic fans weren’t impressed by their club’s social media activity this morning.

While supporters wait for the signing of a winger or two to strengthen the first team they were hit with five sales emails before 11am this morning!

To be fair there was also a token mention of tonight’s match against Ajax which made no reference to the away kit which is apparently in tribute to the late nineties when Celtic won very little with the dark kit with horizontal pinstripes most associated with the night Henrik Larsson broke his leg away to Lyon.

Fans do have the option to opt out of following a Twitter account but now and then there is something of interest from the club beyond attempts to get fans to spend even more money.

The bottom line is always the bottom line, for every angry reaction there are bound to be hundreds of units of kit sold by the club and Adidas.

The sales pitch surrounding kits is something to behold. Previous shirts have been inspired by the pink colour on the match ticket in Lisbon for the 1967 European Cup Final, two seasons ago the home kit was a tribute to a piece of stained glass that used to be above the main entrance to Celtic Park.

The 25/26 away kit comes with the following story on the Celtic website:

Inspired by iconic ’90s Away Kits, the horizontal neon green pinstripes are a modern update to a classic club look and the jersey is made with moisture-managing AEROREADY to keep you dry and comfortable throughout long away days.

Finish off the look with matching black shorts with neon green details, including a sewn-on club badge.

The Mens away kit costs £75 or if you prefer an authentic one it will set you back £120. You can draw your own conclusions over what you get for £75.

Without question commercial matters are essential to the well being of a football club, without shirt sales and all of the associated items Celtic and other clubs would struggle or have to raise ticket prices to retain income levels.

There is a balance however, in current terms it is known as reading the room.

At yesterday’s media conference in Como Brendan Rodgers was informed that Cesc Fabregas has completed 90% of his transfer business for the entire window. Before he switched into employee mode the thoughts of the Celtic manager to that news would be priceless.

While the club goes all out to extract more money from supporters the same enthusiasm isn’t being shown to providing Brendan Rodgers with a first team squad ready for the Champions League.

Discounting peripheral figures Greg Taylor and Nicolas Kuhn have left Celtic, Kieran Tierney and Ben Nygren have arrived.

Towards the end of last season, when the arrival of Tierney was known Rodgers stated that he was looking for three signings, presumably first team ready rather than a repeat of the 2023 projects.

There are 10 days to go before the SPFL Premiership gets underway, the Champions League Play Off takes place on August 19/20 and 26/27.

With each passing day the frustrations of supporters grows, a novel idea would be to sign players and parade them for the kit launches.

That seems highly unlikely with the Celtic social media team in the firing line as they chase their targets- just like Rodgers.
