Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he is looking to add two strikers to his squad.
Last weekend Oh Hyeon-gyu was sold to Genk but hopes of signing Adam Idah have lengthened with the striker starting for Norwich in the pre-season matches against Club Brugge and Standard Liege.
Kyogo Furuhashi started Saturday’s 4-0 win away to DC United with Mikey Johnston taking over that role at half-time.
Daizen Maeda is another option to play as a striker but neither the former Yokohama forward or Johnston offer the sort of presence that Idah brought to the club when he was signed on loan in January.
Celtic have still to sign an outfield player in the eight weeks since they lifted the Scottish Cup, talking to The Sun Rodgers set out his intentions for one key position:
My ideal scenario would be to have three strikers. The plan was for us to have Kyogo, one other and bring through a youngster. That was the role we came up with for Rocco.
It’s very difficult for a club of this size to have three top strikers. You can live with two because we play so many games and the specific nature of them means we can change it about.
Three is difficult but I also thought it would be good for development to bring in a young player from within. Rocco was that, but he’s moved on.
It is a bit of a stretch to be claiming that Rocco Vata could have been third choice striker.
After three years playing in the Lowland League, half of that time as a winger Vata would have been a high risk third option.
Getting sent out on loan to another SPFL Premiership club would have been a better option after playing just five minutes in the top division last season, replacing Luis Palma late on in the 1-1 draw at Aberdeen in February.
It looks highly unlikely that any new signing will be involved in the friendlies against Manchester City on Tuesday or in Saturday’s match against Chelsea.
There are no more friendlies scheduled but with no midweek matches during August any arrivals will be able to settle in to training at Lennoxtown without interruptions.
After four disastrous transfer windows managed by Mark Lawwell little is known about Celtic’s current recruitment set up.
Rodgers does appear to have put a stop to the ‘project market’ that Lawwell Junior excelled in, now the club has the awkward job of trying to move on almost all of the signings made last summer.

Having some younger talent on rotation in the strike force sounds like a solid idea to me. Let’s see how this unfolds…
