Gus Lagerbielke has given a very refreshing interview about life after Celtic and his future plans.
Despite signing a five year contract for Celtic in August it is very clear that the Swede won’t be playing any part in Brendan Rodgers’ plans.
It will go down as one of the mysteries of the season why it all went wrong for Lagerbielke who has a win at Ibrox and scoring the winning goal in a Champions League packed into just six starting experiences and coming off the bench in four more.
On paper it appears that the young Swede has made a better impression that Maik Nawrocki but the former Legia Warsaw defender finished the season as third choice central defender, ahead of Lagerbielke and Stephen Welsh.
Sometime in the autumn it went wrong for the former Elfsborg defender, with a January move to Italy falling through over concerns for the fitness of Cameron Carter-Vickers.
When Celtic were picking up trophies at the end of the season Lagerbielke seemed genuinely pleased for his team-mates but from an interview with Fotbollskanalen it is clear that he is looking for a fresh start next season.
Fotbollskanalen: According to Tuttomercatoweb, Lecce are still interested and Frosinone is said to have entered the hunt as well. Aftonbladet has also stated that Genoa and Udinese are speculators at center back.
LAGERBIELKE: I know that there are a number of teams that are interested, but not much more than that
FOTBOLLSKANALEN: Is it from teams in Italy?
GL: Yes, there are interested teams in Italy and also other leagues.
FBS: Considering how the season went at Celtic, how do you feel about the summer window that is just around the corner?
GL: Just like all other players, I want to play and make a difference. I am ready to do so if the opportunity arises.
On his season at Celtic he added:
GL: Very instructive. I have developed a lot and become a better player. I have brought a lot with me. I’m looking forward to the future and I think I’ll take a lot from Celtic to the next team I join.
FBS: I almost interpret that as you not staying?
GL: It is difficult to say anything before something is ready. I have a contract with Celtic, but it’s no secret that I want to play.
FBS In terms of interest, it is quite a big step to go from Elfsborg to Celtic. How have you experienced it?
GL: It’s just been a lot of fun. It is a big club, one of the biggest in the world in terms of interest and supporters. It has been a lot of fun to be part of it.
During the January speculation it was suggested that Celtic would need to pay part of Lagerbielke’s wages if he was to go out on loan to Lecce.
Celtic were reported to have paid Elfsborg a fee of around £3m to sign Lagerbielke, if all of the Italian interest is genuine they should be able to recoup most of that transfer fee.
