‘Built like a fridge also plays like one’ ‘Awful player’ ‘the Harry McGuire of Conor Goldsons’ Calvin Bassey goes viral after EPL horror show

EPL fans got their first live look at the hilarious defending of Calvin Bassey last night.

Ange Postecoglou had already experienced the benefits of Bassey-ball while in charge of Celtic with the defender coming up with the goods again last night to send Spurs back to the top of the EPL table.

Playing the ball out of defence carries one requirement, you find one of your team-mates with the ball. Twice last night Bassey, under no pressure, picked out opponents as he passed out of defence to hand Spurs two goals.

Ajax fans will know the feeling, they suffered a season of the former Ibrox star before winning a watch when Fulham came to the rescue with a ridiculous offer of £14m for the former Leicester starlet.

After a nightmare season Ajax were delighted to take a £4m hit, now he is Fulham’s problem as they deal with the frenzy built up by the Scottish media from February to May 2022.

Being physical and athletic will get you a long way in the SPFL but outwith that some basic football ability is required. To describe Bassey as limited is a compliment but like Oli Burke a little talent can be very lucrative when handled by the right agent.

Within two years the Nigerian internationalist will be falling down the ladder in the English Championship, there might be little flashes of ‘form’ but the concentration, consistency and ability to defend just isn’t there.

Even Marco Silva acknowledges the problems with the Fulham boss telling London News Online:

Tottenham pressed really strong and more on Calvin. They knew that we were playing a left-footed central defender on the right-hand side, and we were punished for the mistake [for the first goal].

What disappointed me more is the second goal. We spoke at half-time about what we should have done completely different, and we conceded a similar goal at the beginning of the second half after we had started well.

We spoke at half-time that the solution for Bassey has to be completely different, the position of our midfield has to be completely different for him to have a solution.

Not just the decision from Calvin was wrong for the second goal, the players should be there to avoid this type of mistake because of course it can happen. It is much more of a process than just one player making a bad decision.

Rather than switch the way that his team play to suit Bassey, Silva will probably find it easier to bring in a competent defender that can regularly pass to his own team-mates.
