Celtic are apparently admirers of Eric Dier, sparking some incredible transfer speculation.
There are no doubt plenty of players in the EPL that Celtic and Brendan Rodgers admire but there isn’t the foggiest hope of a current captain with no link to the club moving to Celtic.
Bruno Fernandez and Virgil van Dijk will be admired by Celtic as well but there isn’t much prospect of either joining Celtic any time soon although an emotional return in four or five years time can’t be ruled out for the Dutchman.
Dier has a year left to run on his Spurs contract, if a new contract isn’t agreed in the next fortnight the chances are that he will let the clock run down and leave as a free agent next summer.
Brought up in Lisbon, with 49 England caps in his locker, Dier will have the pick of clubs from the major leagues offering him deals as a free agent. In the event of departing Spurs in the next fortnight his weekly wages will be way in excess of the monthly money that most Celtic players are on while a transfer fee won’t be in seven figures.
Undeterred 90min reports:
Ligue 1 side Monaco, who have been linked with Fulham defender and Tottenham target Tosin Adarabioyo, have asked Tottenham about the availability of Dier, as have a number of Bundesliga teams. Closer to home, London neighbours Crystal Palace and Scottish champions Celtic are believed to be admirers of Dier.
With Maik Nawrocki signed and Gustaf Lagerbielke on his way from Elfsborg Brendan Rodgers has already made some definite plans about his central defence.
Cameron Carter-Vickers has been central to the success of Celtic over the last two seasons with the defence consisting of CCV and AN Other.
Having committed to Nawrocki and Lagerbielke almost signed up there is no prospect of Dier fitting anywhere close to Celtic’s business model.
