Looking forward to having a big impact- Rodgers lays down expectations for Celtic new bhoy

Brendan Rodgers is looking for Yang Hyunjun to make a similar impact as Oh Hyeon-gyu on the Celtic first team squad.

In mid-season, with Giorgos Giakoumakis on his way to Atlanta United, Ange Postecoglou turned to Suwon Samsung for a replacement with the firepower needed to build on the momentum built up in the first half of the season.

On his fourth substitute appearance, away to St Mirren in February Oh scored the first of seven goals, signing the SPFL season off with a double against Aberdeen.

Yang has known about his move from Gangwon for more than a month and now has two weeks training with his new team-mates before the competitive action gets underway.

Speaking to the Celtic website, Rodgers said: “We’re delighted to bring Yang to the club and I’m sure he’s going to be another great addition to the squad.

He’s a player that we’ve looked at closely and who we think will further enhance our attacking options which, of course, already include his fellow countryman Oh.’

He’s an exciting player who was the Young Player of the Year in South Korea last season, which is an indication of his quality, and I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to having a big impact at the club.

It’s also clear that he was very keen to make this move to Celtic so I know he’ll be delighted that everything has now been agreed and we’re really looking forward to working with him.”

With Jota sold, Daizen Maeda possibly being repositioned as a striker and injuries to Mikey Johnston and Marco Tilio there could be an early opportunity for Yang to impress.

Liel Abada and James Forrest appear to be the first choice wingers with Sead Haksabanovic and Rocco Vata next in line for game time.

Yang should meet up with his new team-mates tomorrow at Lennoxtown with attention turning to Saturday’s friendly against Wolves at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

The performances of 22 players on duty against Gamba Osaka will have encouraged Rodgers with obvious benefits from playing against opponents that are in mid-season.

Having viewed everyone in his squad the new Celtic boss will trim down the numbers in order to get his core squad upto speed for the start of the SPFL campaign on August 5. With early trips to Pittodrie and Ibrox there isn’t any time for settling into the season with clashes coming up against the sides that finished second and third last season.

The announcement of Yang has been anticipated since Gangwon made social media announcements on July 15 while Celtic were in action against Portimonense at their Algarve Training Base.

A deal for Busan Ipark midfielder Kwon Hyeok-kyu seemed to be running in tandem with the Yang deal with both players pictured arriving at Glasgow Airport on Saturday night.

There is an expectation that the two Korean players will take some time to acclimatise to the Scottish game but with Oh at the club some of the mysteries of Scottish football should be explained.

Arriving in mid-season there shouldn’t be many fitness issues with Yang and Kwon possibly ahead of the rest of Rodgers’ squad in terms of match fitness.

Legia Warsaw defender Maik Nawrocki is also believed to be in Scotland with a more substantial deal with an initial fee of £4.3m believed to have been agreed.

With Cameron Carter-Vickers currently out injured there is an immediate first team vacancy alongside Carl Starfelt in the centre of the Celtic defence.

Rodgers is likely to host a media conference before the Wolves match where he is likely to be asked about the progress of transfer activity.
